  3. How to Check Your Florida FR-44 Filing Status

Buying a policy and having an FR-44 filing recorded are related, but they are not the same step. If Florida has told you that an FR-44 is required, it is reasonable to ask exactly what your insurer has submitted and what appears on your driver record. This guide helps you check without guessing from an insurance card alone.

Three steps: confirm the policy is active, confirm the FR-44 filing was sent, and check the official status
A policy, a filing, and a state record are three separate things to confirm.

Start with the notice, not a general checklist

Keep the notice from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) handy. It identifies the requirement tied to your record. Florida's financial-responsibility verification guide explains that FR-44 certificates can be checked against the department's insurance database and that a certificate may need insurer verification when an electronic record cannot be located. Your individual notice and FLHSMV record control what you need.

Ask your agent three precise questions

  1. Is my policy active? Request the insurer name, policy number, effective date, and declarations page.
  2. Was the FR-44 certificate submitted to Florida? Ask for the filing date and a copy or confirmation of the certificate. A regular insurance ID card is not, by itself, proof that the required FR-44 was recorded.
  3. Does the filing match my record? Verify your name and driver-license information with the agent, and flag any mismatch promptly.

Check the official status, then resolve any discrepancy

FLHSMV lists its Driver License Check as the online place to review current license status and update insurance information for a financial-responsibility case. If the record does not show what you expect, do not assume a delay is harmless or that a screenshot of your policy will fix it. Contact your agent and FLHSMV to identify what is missing, whether a correction or verification is needed, and whether you are currently permitted to drive. The department's verification guidance describes why an insurer may have to confirm a certificate.

Keep the coverage and filing aligned

If you replace a vehicle, change insurers, or move, tell your agent that an FR-44 requirement is active before changing the policy. Confirm the effective dates and filing plan before ending old coverage. Florida's insurance-reporting manual identifies separate FR-44 and cancellation transactions, which is why the filing deserves its own check. What Foxx can do

Foxx Insurance can compare carriers for your circumstances and coordinate a required filing. We can provide confirmation of what we submitted, but only FLHSMV can confirm the status of your Florida driving record. If you have a notice or a question about a missing filing, request a quote and include the requirement shown on your notice.
